About 100 guests attended the first ever “FRHS Foundation Inaugural Gala” January 30.

The event was held to provide opportunity for the friends of FRHS to gather, learn more

about the recently established foundation, enjoy great food, and bid on a variety of

quality items to benefit the work of the foundation.

A silent and live auction, hors d’ouevres and wine were the mainstay of the evening.

Many businesses and individuals donated money and gifts for the silent and live auctions.

The auction brought in a total of $12, 637.00,  which will go into the FRHS Foundation

Endowment.

The money for the foundation will be used for specific items and projects, that will

enhance the lives of Oakview Terrace residents, and hospital patients.

What Is A Foundation?  By Mary Waltner, Foundation Director

What, exactly, IS a foundation?  This question is a frequent one, asked of me many times since the Freeman Regional Health Services foundation was established.

Webster defines foundations, or fundraising, asthe process of soliciting and gathering contributions by requesting donations from individuals, businesses, or other governmental agencies.”

In all of my research about the topic of foundations,  a common thread is consistent throughout:

It is a myth that fundraising is only about  money.

While fundraising is, in its simplest form, about raising funds for projects, it is so much more.  It is about making a difference in people’s lives.  It is about encouraging people to support a cause with enthusiasm and passion.  It is about changing the world, one step at a time.  It is about making friends and establishing relationships with people in our communities who will be lifelong advocates of Freeman Regional Health Services, so that we may continue to provide quality health care and improve the lives of our patients and residents.

MISSION: To invest for the future through financial and in-kind support that will help sustain and strengthen the services we provide to the rural communities we serve.

Oakview Terrace Resident Spotlight ... Matilda Tornow

Matilda Huber Tornow has been a resident at Oakview Terrace for almost 6 months.

She was born on April 30, 1921 on a farm in Hutchinson County, to R.J. and Josephine Huber.

Matilda has loved flowers and gardening all of her life.  She also loves reading.  “I read everything I can get my hands on!” she said.

Matilda and her siblings were raised on the farm, and she and her husband Art continued the farming tradition with their own family.

“Art and I grew up as neighbors,” she said.  “We went to the same social events and attended the same church.  He was considered quite the catch—all the girls liked him—but he picked me! I am a very lucky woman to have snagged him!”

They married and had four children:  Julie (Huber), Robert, Tom and Gerald.

Matilda’s daughter Julie said her mom and dad raised all sorts of exotic birds, including peacocks.

“Mom would make wreaths, pins and decorative arrangements out of peacock feathers.”

She said her mother was a fabulous cook, and  “eating at her table was a huge privilege.”

Mom taught all her grandkids to make buns and pies with little sardine cans as pans, says Julie. “Her donuts were and still are known far and wide. Hunters still expect them when they come in from the field. My brother Tom and I try to duplicate them during hunting season. “

Matilda now resides at Oakview Terrace.  She enjoys visits from her family.  She has 10 grand children, and 7 great grand children.

Julie says “Mom has always had a fantastic  sense of humor.  Every time I visit her, I come away smiling.  We always said ‘Mom is queen of one-liners!’ ”

Her advice to young people?  “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.”

FIGHT THE FLU!

The Center For Disease Control says “Take 3” Actions to Fight The Flu:

1. Get the yearly seasonal flu vaccine.  The seasonal flu vaccine will not protect you against the 2009 H1N1 flu.

2. Take every day Preventive Actions: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash. Wash your hands often.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.  Germs spread this way.  Stay home if you are experiencing flu like symptoms.

3. If your doctor prescribes medication be sure and take as directed.

iF anyone experiences any of the following flu symptoms, stay home and see your doctor!

Coughing...Fever...Sore Throat...Runny Nose...Body aches..

.Chills and sometimes Vomiting and Diarrhea.
