Frequently Asked Questions

Does Freeman Regional Health Services have visiting hours?  Friends and family members may visit a patient or resident any time; however, we ask that visitors be sensitive to the patient or resident's rest periods.

What if the only time I can come is late at night?  Will I be able to get in to the facility?  Yes.  There are telephones located in two areas:  One is on the left wall inside the main entrance to the hospital. The other is located in the ER entrance on the left wall.  No dialing is necessary; just lift up the receiver and it will automatically ring to the nurse's station.

How many health care providers are on staff?  There are three full time physicians, a part time general surgeon, two physician assistants and one certified nurse practitioner.  There are also eleven visiting specialists who make regular monthly visits to either the hospital or clinic.  Appointments can be made with any of these specialists through your primary care physician.

Do you do surgeries and what types?  Surgeries are performed every Tuesday by staff surgeon Dr. Lisa Miller.  Some surgeries performed at Freeman Medical Center include gall bladder, hernia repair, hysterectomies, mastectomies, lumpectomies, tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies, thyroidectomies, and carpel tunnels.

How many people are employed at Freeman Regional Health Services?  There are 130 employees.

What about Medicare and Medicaid coverage for nursing home care?  Oakview Terrace is a Medicare Skilled Facility.  In order to be covered by Medicare, a resident must have had a 3-day acute care stay at the hospital, and must be admitted with orders to receive physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.  There are other qualifiers as well, such as acute nursing care. Medicaid is a state payment source for those residents who have depleted their savings and other forms of financial help.  For more information about Medicare and Medicaid and its application to hospital, nursing home or swing bed patients, contact Social Worker Ginny Gulbrandson at (605) 925-2108.

Can family members eat meals with their loved ones, and how much do meals cost?   Yes, you may eat meals with your loved ones; however, 24 hour notice is preferred, if possible.  Please notify the nurse's stations at Oakview Terrace or Freeman Medical Center of your plans. Call (605) 925-4000.  The cost of meals is: Breakfast - $3.45; Dinner - $4.51 and Supper - $3.98.  Payment is to be made to the FRHS business office.            

What services do you offer?   Freeman Medical Center is an independent, acute care critical access 25 bed hospital offering a wide range outpatient and inpatient services, a fully staffed,  3-bay emergency room open 24/7,  and a visiting specialists program.  Oakview Terrace is a 59-bed Medicare Skilled Nursing Home with round the clock nursing care.  For more information click on services.

Is there an on-staff Chaplain?  Yes.  Chaplain Dudley Horning offers non-denominational spiritual guidance to residents and patients.  He has been on staff since 1988, and is on call 24/7.

What determines if a person should be admitted into the Dementia Care Unit?  There are specific criteria developed by the Director of Nursing and the Medical Director of Oakview Terrace.  If you have questions about your loved one needing this service, contact Director of Nursing Heather Thompson at hthompson@freemanregional.com.
