The FRHS Ladies Auxiliary was organized when the hospital opened in 1952. The newly formed group,
consisting of 13 members, helped the new hospital in a variety of ways, from painting, to sewing curtains,
draw sheets, surgical sheets, napkins and many other needed items. They secured Gideon Bibles for
patient bedside stands, provided special treats and tray favors for patients, and donated
all of their labor for major cleaning.
Today the Auxiliary continues to play a very important and active role in the life of Freeman Regional Health
Services. Each year the group holds major fund raisers which include soup day, the membership drive, a
bake sale and pillow cleaning service. The money raised goes toward the purchase of major items for the
hospital or nursing home.
Some items the auxiliary has purchased in recent years include: a whirlpool tub, two patient lifts, lab equipment,
a new public address intercom system, a blood pressure machine, a wheelchair scale, a new television and VCR,
glucose meters, an incubator, a number of electric "hi lo" beds for the nursing home, benches for the nursing home
patio, and a seven-person manikin set and an advanced life support cardiac rhythm manikin for the hospital for
CPR training.
The auxiliary provided numerous items for the Oakview Terrace Dementia Unit as well, such as a refrigerator,
pantry, microwave and cart, insulated food cart, dishes and Christmas items. Countless other items and equipment
have been donated by the auxiliary over the years.
Most recently, the auxiliary donated a step platform for radiology, a cholestech machine for lab, and a love seat for
the nursing home family room.
The auxiliary also donates turkeys and hams on holidays to the dietary department for residents, patients and staff,
and plans a Christmas party for residents at Oakview Terrace.
Current officers for the auxiliary are President, Marlene Herman; Vice-President, Marian Gering; Treasurer, Marge
Schrag and Secretary Alice Fliginger.
