The Freeman Medical Center swing bed program is licensed by the state of South Dakota.
This program is under the rules and regulations of the Health Care Financing Administration. It is designed for rural hospitals that are under a 50-bed capacity to meet the temporary needs of patients when acute care is no longer necessary.
Private Pay/Private Insurance
When a patient is placed on private pay swing bed status, reimbursement is totally obtained from the patient or through private insurance if applicable.
Medicare Skilled
Medicare will recognize and reimburse for a skilled level of care rating. To obtain Medicare Skilled rating, the patient must meet strict established criteria and have been on acute hospital care for 3 days prior to swing bed admission. This level of care will be under continuous evaluation and is subject to change. At that time, the patient will be notified and an alternative payment source will be arranged.
Medicaid (Long term care assistance program)
The Medicaid program will pay a fixed daily rate for swing bed care. The patient must meet both financial and medical eligibility requirements to qualify for this program. An application must be completed by the responsible party.
