FRHS Press Release -- Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Precautions

March 9, 2020

Freeman Regional Health Services Press Release

RE: Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Precautions

Freeman Regional Health Services (FRHS) knows that concern regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is rising both nationally and internationally. FRHS leadership and care teams have been meeting on a regular basis to closely monitor the developments of the COVID-19 outbreak. To ensure that we are prepared, FRHS is following South Dakota Department of Health (SD DOH) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and implementing additional precautions to protect our patients, residents, employees and communities.

Please be aware that we will be asking patients specific questions in order to identify and isolate potential COVID-19 cases. We will ask about current respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat and shortness of breath. If patients are experiencing these symptoms, we will ask that they sanitize their hands, wear a mask and wait in a designated area. We will also ask patients if they have traveled recently or if they have been in close contact with someone who might have COVID-19.

The CDC offers the following tips to help protect yourself and loved ones from respiratory illness:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

If you or your loved ones are feeling sick, follow the below tips to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze by placing the inside of your elbow over your nose and mouth OR cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, throw the tissue in the trash and sanitize hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Thank you for helping us stop the spread of COVID-19. Our goal is to protect our patients, residents, employees and communities from the spread of COVID-19.

FRHS will continue to monitor SD DOH and CDC recommendations for COVID-19. For more information please visit the following sites:
